Our choice of track is “Bigmouth Strikes Again” by The
Smiths, which was released as a single, and also on their album The Queen Is Dead.

The smiths are an interesting indie band, in the sense of how they portray themselves to their audience – their art, lyrics and tunes all connote intelligence; people have called Morrissey a poet. Johnny Marr said in an interview with the Guardian “We invented indie as we still know it” meaning not only the music, but the whole indie scene. Analyzing their work will take time and effort and I’m sure will be enjoyable.
The track was chosen on the simple basis that everyone within the group agreed to work with it – not everyone in our group has the same musical taste, so we had to work around that, but we finally came to a decision.
The meaning of the song is about Morrissey's exasperation with the media press with how they scrutinize every single syllable that leaves his mouth, and how they demonize him unfairly and ridiculously. In the song Morrissey says that “[he] was only joking” about the things he said, and compares himself to Joan of Arc and how she was persecuted. Morrissey is sarcastic and biter in the song, saying he has a “bigmouth” and because of this “[he’s] got no right to take [his] place with the human race”, so he is accusing the media of taking his words too seriously and exaggerating them.
