Meeting 4

On the 30th october we met up to find a suitable background for the conceptual side of our music video. Before that we took 2 lilliputs and a manofotto back with us as our filming location will be in one of our living rooms. We went into various home stores to look at wallpapers and fabrics to see if there was a design that suited our requirements. In the end, we didn't find anything that stood at to us instead we will use one of our initial choices of backgrounds.

Video 2: General Lighting Incompetence

We had some issues...

Melbourne singer/songwriter Gotye has released a music video for “Somebody That I Used To Know”, appearing in body paint alongside featured artist Kimbra. The music video involves the progressive animated painting of a mural behind Gotye while he sings, and then as the clip advances the paint envelopes his body to finally show he has become one with the background. The view widens to reveal the female vocalist on the track, Kimbra who is also painted “into the background”. As the lyrics describe the breakdown of the relationship, Kimbra becomes depainted – unattached – by stop motion again.
The visuals amplify the meaning of the lyrics, and of course they can be interpreted differently by various audiences. the painted background
Kimbra is no longer part of Gotye's world or life.

What is a music video for?

This is an example of a conceptual music video.

A narrative video follows a story line. This music video by the Synth-pop band A-Ha  uses the fantasy narrative. The 'Take On Me' music video uses a technique called Rotoscoping (tracing over live footage by hand) to give the effect that the animated world in the video and the live action world  in the music video have come together. This is an effective technique as for the time it (1980s) it was rather innovative.

This is an example of a performance music video.

Seventies Wallpaper

For the conceptual, the colours red, green yellow and possibly orange will dominate the mise-en-scene (these colours originate from the "Amelie" title sequence).
We are planning to buy wallpaper with similar colours and patterns as these seventies prints.

Meeting 3

We met up on a Monday so that Hafsah could model the suit. For the mise-en-scene of the photographs we chose to go to a library so that the books in the background could connote the theme of geekness and being different and being lost in your own world.

We also discussed various ways in which we could shoot the performance:
- Using a paper character (in the song there is a high-pitched voice and we thought of using a paper mouth, this would have been part of the conceptual)

- Using a mask (concealing the performers face and therefore gender)

- Instruments

- Green screen room

Slide 8: The End

Meeting 1

In our first meeting, we bullet pointed various ideas concerning our performer (our notes).
- get a female singer
- dress them up as a guy
- be ambigious about gender
- androginous
- reveal singer gradually (shot clothes first, then face)

- be experimental with shots
 - have a variety of shots (CU, MS, LS)

- colours vibrant

- unique, creative

- experiment with blurring
- lighting depends on if we are shooting in daylight (outdoors or indoors)

- performing shots: maybe like adele's "someone like you" in one shot, maybe with seperate shots at the beginning
- conceptual in stop motion

- think about illustrating lyrics

- our band's look

- mix different looks together => headphones?
                                                => flowing/loose clothes
                                                => a bit of gothic (colour like emilie autumn) (bohemian/gypsy)
Emilie Autumn

                 Bohemian Style Clothes

                                                => hat?
                                                => suits (vintage)
                                                => if person has long hair tie it up and let her take it out at some point (as a way of revealing gender slowly)
                                                => colour hairspray?
